In Vlahi participants will be introduced to Bulgarian traditional agriculture, gardening, farming practices. Through lectures and presentations they will get more familiar with subsistence and sustainable, small-scale, family farming as a viable alternative to the industrial, non-sustainable agriculturalpractices. Very important part of the project will be the introduction of urban agriculture –growing our own food and being less dependent on supermarkets. During these 10 days, we will discuss:

  • …sustainable vs unsustainable agriculture
  • …the agriculture as a source of sustainable growth for rural communities and areas
  • …how building our own garden in the city
  • …what we can do support our community, neighborhood to move towards more sustainable agriculture

VLAHI – the exchange will take place in Vlahi, situated at the gateway to Pirin Mountains. Vlahi village issituated 9 km awayfromKresna and about 160 km – from Sofia.

MOUNTAINS CONNECTING PEOPLE

The Youth Exchange “Awakening of Spring in Vlahi” is part of the bigger project called “Mountains connecting people”. This project includes three Youth Exchanges, which will take place in different seasons and countries (Kosovo, Bulgaria and Croatia), in small mountain communities separated by distance and history, but which have in common a close link to nature and traditional lifestyle.  The first part of the project Winter Peace in Brezovica already took place in Kosovo, covering the period 12th– 22nd of March 2015. Some of the participants from the Kosovo project are already eager to take active part in the Vlahi Youth Exchange. Participants have the possibility to take part in next two Mountains Connecting people Youth Exchanges: Farewell to Spring in Vlahi. Vlahi, Bulgaria, 10th-20st of June 2015. Active Summer in Kuterevo. Kuterevo, Croatia, 24th of August – 3rd of September 2015.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPANTS:

  • be interested in topics and willing to get prepared before coming to Bulgaria
  • be willing to live simply, sustainable and in a community for 10 days (and hopefully longer)

Travelling, Food, Accommodation

Accommodation, food and all costs for the Youth Exchange activities are 100% covered by the Erasmus+ program (except 20% of the travel costs). 80% of the travel costs will be reimbursed thanks to the Erasmus+ program. We strongly encourage all participants to use environmentally friendly means of transport such as trains, buses, etc. The food will be vegetarian with exception with some local meat specialties. The general idea is to get more connected with the people taking part in the youth exchange, to share our ideas and views. Therefore, tin order to get reconnected with each other, we will get disconnected with some daily necessities like Internet 🙂. Please, take in consideration that there is NO internet connection in Vlahi. The closest proper Internet connection is in Kresna, which is the town near Vlahi and is 9 km from the village. This means 30 minutes by car or 2 or 3 hours walking. This youth exchange is part of SCI (Service Civil International) worldwidecampaign “Create a Climate for Peace” as well.

If you are interested in taking part in Farewell to Spring in Vlahi, please send your application to gaia.kosovo@gmail.com before the 25st of April (only for youth from Kosovo)
